It is hard for a driver to notice acceleration problems with normal driving. With circumstance like driving up a hill or during fast driving, it is in these situations a driver will notice the slow acceleration meaning the engine of their vehicle struggles to keep up. For high mileage vehicles, the symptoms will be seen immediately.

It’s a common problem to high mileage vehicles, but it’s not that serious or requirement of immediate attention regarding the engine as some need to be checked first to locate the problem then possibly fix it. Stated below are some of the common causes in this article.

Oxygen Sensor Malfunction

car engine partsExhausts emissions are monitored by the oxygen sensor device, air-fuel ratio going through the engine of the vehicle are analyzed by the monitoring of the device. Acceleration and smooth running required will be achieved when the car gets the proper amount of fuel, for the fuel to burn properly in the combustion cylinders.

The computer unit receives information about the amount of fuel being used from the sensor, that’s why when the sensor gets damaged there will be a result of fuel rich mixture as the engine of that vehicle will have no idea what ratio of air mixture to intake. No matter how you, the result will be slow acceleration.

Clogged Air flow meter

A car won’t accelerate when the Airflow meter malfunction. It is attached and located on the inlet air cleaner. Engine engine control unit will calculate the air-fuel mixture data received from the inlet air cleaner when the air flow meter measures air mass that flows.

Throttle position sensor fail

This sensor is to detect the throttle valve opening angle which is controlled by the gas pedal. Data is sent to the engine control unit through the detector when you accelerate. Engine speed cannot be controlled when the TPS malfunctions as there will be an increase or decrease without any press or depress of the accelerator pedal.

Dirty Fuel Filters

Clogged Air Filters

Similar to fuel filters provide clean fuel to the engine, the air filters supply the engine with clean air to be used in the air-fuel mixture which is sent to the combustion chambers to burn. Slow acceleration and decrepit will be a result if your air filter is clogged with dirt as the engine won’t get the right air-fuel mixture
